April 20, 2005

Alaska communities will receive almost $2.5 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to fund new health centers in the Chignik region, Cordova, St. George, and Wasilla.  These grants will help Alaskans, many without health insurance, to obtain comprehensive
primary health care services

"We are delighted that these communities are now funded to establish community health centers, so more Alaskans are able to get primary health care,” says Marilyn Walsh Kasmar, Executive Director of the Alaska Primary Care Association. We worked closely with these communities by providing technical assistance with their applications, and we look forward to supporting their new health centers.”

Grantees are the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation for a Chignik sub-regional clinic serving five communities ($900,055); Eastern Aleutian Tribes for St. George ($268,333); Native Village of Eyak for Cordova ($650,000); and Mat-Su Health Services for Wasilla ($650,000).  Cordova, St. George, and Wasilla will receive their funding in May.  Chignik will receive funding in December.
